Local woman flourishes as doctor and entrepreneur

This year, Women's Day will be commemorated under the theme, 'Celebrating 30 years of democracy Towards Women's Development'.

In honour of August being Women’s Month, the Boksburg Advertiser spoke to multi-talented Maria Ngobese (37) from Bartlett, who is flourishing as a doctor and entrepreneur.

Ngobese grew up in Rietkuil in Mpumalanga and matriculated at Steelcrest High School.

After finishing matric, Ngobese studied medicine at the University of Pretoria.

“It took hard work to get to where I am today. My parents didn’t have enough money to put me through college, so I had to apply for a bursary. It was a miracle and beautiful opportunity. My parents were pastors and prayed for this opportunity,” she said.

After graduating, she moved to Boksburg in 2013 and did her internship at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

Today she specialises in family medicine at the Bernice Samuel Hospital in Delmas.

Apart from being a doctor she started an IV vitamin lounge in 2020, where she offers IV vitamin and therapy booster shops.

Furthermore, she started her own clothing brand, Dr MN, a year later.

Apart from her booming career, she is a wife to Bongani and mother to Lwazi (14) and Mfundi (9).

About balancing all the different hats she has to wear, Ngobese said time management and prioritising is important.

“Women must take care of themselves physically, mentally and spiritually.

“We are built to multitask and it’s important for us to take time to lean in on ourselves. They often look after everyone around them and forget about themselves. Self-treat is a must, and it can be done at home. It doesn’t have to cost any money.”

She added women should build confidence.
“Never feel inferior because you are a woman. To be a woman is a beautiful experience. Women can do hard and difficult things. We are all unique and there is no need for competition,” she said.

Ngobese urged women to live life to the fullest.
“If you are alive, you have the opportunity to make things better.”
