Reeby charts a bold future for ERU

As the club’s first sales and marketing director, he’s turning his passion into strategy, aiming to secure sponsorships, strengthen the team, and make East Rand United a consistent champion.

When Cyril Reeby talks about rugby, it is not just about the game; it is about opportunity, survival and building something that lasts.

The 48-year-old Boksburg West resident, who grew up in Reiger Park, has been appointed as the first sales and marketing director of East Rand United Rugby Club.

The newly created role is aimed at strengthening the club’s financial foundation and ensuring long-term sustainability. Reeby’s rugby journey began in a community where choices were limited.
“In Reiger Park, there were only two rugby teams. I played for St Anthony as a junior and later represented Eastern Transvaal.
“I am a rugby fanatic. The sport shaped my discipline and my mindset.”

Today, he is a founder and CEO with experience in business development, marketing, corporate relations and sponsorship management. He believes those skills are exactly what East Rand United needs at this stage of its growth.

“The club has the talent, but not always the means. Our biggest challenges have been sponsorship, operating costs, transport and travelling expenses. We’ve also struggled to raise funds and retain good players.”

Reeby said the plan is to build strong networks, secure sponsorships, and put proper systems in place.
“It must be sustainable for our players so they can develop their skills, showcase their ability and eventually provide for themselves. If we are consistent, we can bring more wins.”

He added that the goal is to make sure ERU goes all the way and wins cups. For Reeby, however, this is about more than strategy. It is about giving back to the same community that introduced him to rugby, and ensuring the next generation has both the talent and the support to succeed.

Chairperson Shaun Johannes described the appointment as a significant step forward in positioning the club for growth both on and off the field.

“We are delighted to welcome Cyril to the East Rand United family. This appointment marks an important step forward in our growth journey. Cyril’s expertise will be invaluable as we build sustainable partnerships and tell the story of our club to a wider audience.”
