Belvedere Bobcats heading to nationals soon, seek support

The Bobcats are aiming to raise R17 000 to help cover costs, including transport, fees and uniforms for the 17 athletes.

For the learners who form part of the Belvedere Bobcats, qualifying for the National Cheerleading Championships is about far more than competing for medals.

It is proof that hard work, determination and opportunity can unlock potential and change lives.

The team recently qualified for the championships, set to take place at Matt Sport Stadium in Gauteng from July 2 to 4.

Now, the cheer squad is calling on the community to help them reach the national stage.

According to coach Vivienne Botha, the team’s success is the result of months of dedication, early-morning practices, and a commitment to discipline, teamwork, and personal growth.

“For our learners, this is more than a qualification. It is proof that effort pays off.

“Many have faced personal, social and educational challenges, so stepping onto a national stage gives them pride, confidence and a real sense of belonging,” she said.

Belvedere Bobcats is an inclusive cheerleading team that welcomes learners from different schools and backgrounds.

Through the sport, learners are given the opportunity to develop confidence, leadership skills and resilience while proving that they are every bit as capable as athletes from mainstream schools.

“Sport changes lives. Cheerleading gives our learners a place to belong and a chance to succeed. It teaches teamwork, commitment, leadership and perseverance in a way that is active, inclusive and empowering,” said Botha.

The programme’s impact extends well beyond the competition floor.

Botha said many learners who initially joined the team, lacking confidence, have grown into self-assured young people who participate more in class, build stronger friendships, and are willing to take on new challenges.

One learner who struggled to interact with others is now confidently speaking in front of groups and mentoring younger teammates.

Former Bobcat cheerleaders JJ Diamond and Ouano Erasmus also represented South Africa at the ICU World Cheerleading Championships in Orlando in 2023, with JJ earning national colours again in 2024.

“It is not just about competition. It is about unlocking potential,” said Botha.

Although the team has earned its place at nationals, financial constraints threaten to keep some learners from attending.

The Bobcats are aiming to raise R17 000 to help cover transport, accommodation, meals, competition fees and uniforms for the 17 athletes travelling to the championships.

“It would mean everything to our learners. Support from the community tells them, ‘we see you, believe in you. Your hard work matters.’ For many of our athletes, nationals is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Botha.

Community members and businesses wishing to support the Belvedere Bobcats can contact Vivienne Botha on 071 603 6086.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will help these young athletes proudly represent their school and community on the national stage.
