Sprinter aims to honour his late brother by breaking world records

A star sprinter at Track Titans Academy, Andreas Chizinga (17), plans to set a new record in the Olympics and World Championships when the opportunity arises to honour his late brother, Brian, who inspired him to be a sprinter.

He recently championed the South African Christian School Sports Association (SACSSA) Track and Field competition.

Andreas became a sprinter in Grade Seven.

“When I was young I watched my brother, who inspired me to be a sprinter. I continued with the sport throughout my school career and decided to take it up professionally. Winning the SACSSA meet was my first accomplishment as a professional.

“This victory opened up a potential scholarship opportunity and a chance for me to compete in the SA Championships,” he said.

He aims to break the current 100m record (9.58) and 200m record (19.19) in track and field set by his idol, Usain Bolt.

Andreas said the advantage of being an athlete is that you get to become healthy, but the disadvantage was the sacrifices you had to make for the sport.

“You have to dedicate your time to a healthy diet and avoid activities that could hinder your performance, even though they seem enjoyable.”

Andreas took part in two races and secured a scholarship abroad.

“To be the best athlete, motivation accounts for only 5% of your success, while the remaining 95% is dependent on your discipline and dedication. This includes spending most of your time focussed on te sport and ensuring you eliminate all your distractions,” he said.

He said he had received tremendous support from his family, coach, peers and strangers.
