Meet NWS’ well-seasoned instructor

“One nation, one dream, and one goal for all. Karate for all!”

Sensei Takis Chaniotakos (57), a sixth dan black belt in the New World Shotokan (NWS), has amassed 43 years of karate experience since he first started practising at age 13.

He still calls Boksburg, where he was born on December 24, 1966, home. He first joined a karate club in 1980. Takis then joined the NWS team in 2019 and today he serves as one of the technical directors together with 14 others across the country.

According to Takis, his interest in the sport at a young age grew when sensei Chris Anthony came to his school to provide demonstrations. Becoming a black belt is one of his major accomplishments. He has also become one of South Africa’s top referees in national and international championships.

“We face challenges daily. Karate taught me to stay calm and stay focused when challenges arise,“ said Takis.

He feels a sense of accomplishment when his students are successful. Takis is motivated to train by the urge to see others, no matter their age, colour or creed, grow in the sport as well. He views John Barnett as a great friend, motivator, and encourager.

Takis aspires to see students master Budo karate, also known as the way of empty hand. He advises young karateka to stay focused, to never give up and to pursue perfecting their character.
