Cheers, chants and high expectations filled Bada Bing Sportsbar & Cafe in Boksburg on Thursday night as scores of football fans, proudly dressed in South Africa’s national colours, gathered to watch Bafana Bafana take on Mexico in the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening game.

Ahead of kick-off, optimism was high. Supporters cheered every attack, celebrated every promising move and confidently backed the national team to secure a positive result, with some predicting a 2-1 victory for South Africa.
However, the atmosphere changed after the final whistle as Mexico claimed a 2-0 victory.

The excitement and anticipation that had filled the venue gave way to reflection, with fans expressing mixed reactions to Bafana Bafana’s performance.

Many voiced disappointment at the result, while others raised concerns about the team’s ability to compete against stronger opposition. Yet amid the frustration, there was also hope.

Several supporters remained optimistic, saying the team still has time to regroup, improve and bounce back in the matches ahead. Others felt the players would need to raise their level if they were to challenge top international sides successfully.
