Pretoria highway closed after Steers restaurant roof collapse
The cause of the collapse remains unclear.
The N1 north Polokwane highway in Pretoria has been closed after the roof of a Steers restaurant collapsed on Friday.
An unconfirmed number of people had been injured and rushed to hospital, Rekord North reported.
Emergency services said some of the injured customers were treated on the scene. The collapse happened at about 11:45pm.
“Two of the people were only slightly injured and declined to be taken to hospital and three others were moderately hurt,” said Best Care Ambulance Services spokesperson Xander Loubser.
“Tshwane fire brigade is still at the scene busy with a search-and-rescue to see if there are more people under the debris,” Loubser said.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the Petroport as traffic was backed up.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba advised motorists travelling in the direction of the scene to take the Wallmansthal off-ramp.
“Motorists should not attempt to reach the Petroport because traffic is already delayed,” he said around lunchtime.
Mahamba said the highway could be closed for about an hour or two.
He said the cause of the collapse remained unclear.
