Local youth author shares decision to leave formal schooling

Known for her children's book in support of Clean Brakpan and environmental activism, Brianna Mupaya shares her story.

Brianna Mupaya (16), a youth activist from Brakpan known for her children’s book, Brakpan Broom, and for her environmental activism, celebrated Youth Day this year by sharing her story of choosing a different path.

“At the age of 14, I made the toughest decision of my life that many people considered unusual. I chose to leave formal schooling and pursue online learning,” she said.

“I started focusing on learning computer science along the way and digital marketing. I was aware that technology was advancing so rapidly and that I could learn far beyond traditional education and keep pace with the skills needed in today’s world.”

Learning from home has given Brianna the freedom to focus on her independent studies without the pressures often associated with academic schooling, such as school fees, uniforms and peer pressure.

“However, it has required a lot of personal commitment. While I will be writing my matric next year, my online studies have already opened doors that many of our young people only dream of,” she said.

“Through the skills I have learned, I was able to secure employment at the age of 14. Because I am not working full-time, I have been able to balance my studies and work responsibilities.”

Brianna, who is actively involved in youth activism against GBV+F and in promoting a clean environment, has now set her sights on addressing youth unemployment.

She said she was motivated after noticing that many young people complete matric but struggle to find employment due to a lack of practical experience needed in the workplace.

“Employers often require experience, but it is difficult for young people to gain that experience if opportunities only come after finishing school,” she explained.

“Recognising this challenge, I made the decision to train myself early with skills that would help me build a stronger future.

“I firmly believe that learning should never stop, and in addition to studying technology and digital marketing, I have learned and taught myself valuable practical skills.”

Brianna approached a local woman who taught her how to sew, which not only brought her joy and creativity but also gave her a skill that became part of her personal journey.

“I also enjoy writing books, creating content through visual storytelling and vlogs, and advocating for environmental awareness. These activities have not only helped me, but they have also turned me into a young entrepreneur and active community member,” she said.

Recently, Brianna has begun training at the Brakpan Boxing Club, which she says many people believe is only for boys.

“I wanted to challenge myself and step outside my comfort zone,” she said.

“Boxing has taught me discipline, courage, resilience, and perseverance. I have already completed my first grading, and every training session and push from my coaches reminds me that success comes from pushing through fear and discomfort,” she continued.

Boxing has taught Brianna how to fight, not only in the ring or while training, but also in life. Brianna was also selected as one of the motivational speakers for the SAPS Youth Day Commemoration Expo that took place on June 16 at Carnival City.

“I shared my journey with other young people and showcased my books and products,” she explained.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Jansen’s Meat Market and Clean Brakpan for supporting me in my various projects and community initiatives. Their support has encouraged me to continue pursuing my dreams and making a positive impact in my community,” she said.

“My message to young people is simple: Fight! Fight for your dreams. Fight for your education. Fight for your future. Fight through that fear, the rejections, and the challenges that come along the way.

“Never allow your circumstances to determine your destination. If you are willing to learn, work hard, and believe in yourself, there is no limit to what you can achieve.

“I am still young, and I am still learning, but I have discovered that success belongs to those who are willing to take action. Do not wait for opportunities to come to you, create them yourself,” she concluded.
