Medals and milestones for Ekurhuleni Athletics Club at Comrades Marathon

The City of Ekurhuleni Athletics Club returned from the 2026 Comrades Marathon with a strong medal haul and several notable achievements.

A determined display of endurance and commitment saw the City of Ekurhuleni Athletics Club celebrate a successful 2026 Comrades Marathon, with its runners securing 30 finishes and collecting a range of prestigious race medals.

Among the finishers were four women, while one of the club’s standout performances came from Kamogelo Phogole, who secured a silver medal.

Silver medals are awarded to runners who complete the marathon in under seven hours and 30 minutes.

The club’s runners collected six Bill Rowan medals, seven Robert Mtshali medals, three bronze medals and 13 Vic Clapham medals.

Six runners achieved back-to-back medals, an award recognising athletes who successfully complete two consecutive Comrades Marathons.

Special Mhlanga also reached a major milestone by earning his green number. This is a permanent race number awarded to athletes after 10 successful Comrades finishes.

Once awarded, the number is reserved for the runner for all future editions of the race.

According to the club’s marketing manager, Noko Phil Matlou, one of the notable achievements from this year’s event was Esther Sithole’s performance.

“Perseverance, dedication and consistency finally paid off. She can attest to the Comrades slogan ‘Ska Fela Moya’, which simply means don’t give up.

“After participating in a few Comrades Marathons without medals or not finishing, she consistently went back to the drawing board and regrouped. At last she did it. She is our hero,” he said.
