More than 100 UJ students released
The students were arrested for contravening a court order.
More than 100 students of University of Johannesburg have been from Brixton Police Station today.
Provincial Police spokesperson Captain Tshekiso Mofokeng confirmed that more than 100 students were released on warning and they will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
150 protesting UJ students were arrested yesterday for contravening a court order obtained by the university. It is understood that nine lawyers are representing the students with some offering their services pro bono.
Parents and community members wait patiently for the release of other students and some brought food and toiletries for those who were at the police station overnight, Northcliff-Melville Times reported.
“The university sent an SMS to the arrested students notifying them that, they were suspended,” UJ SRC president Khutso Rammutla said
Some students continued to sing as they wait outside of the police station for their colleagues to be released and they complained about the police treatment.
“We are very frustrated and not satisfied with the way the police are handling the matter,” said Lindokuhle Xulu, a political science student at UJ.
