Watch: Unit ablaze at Duvha Power Station

An oil spill resulted in a fire at Duvha's Unit 2 boiler shortly after 09:00 today.

Photos and video footage supplied to the Middelburg Observer show smoke billowing from Unit 2 at Duvha Power Station in Mpumalanga.

Duvha spokeswoman Lenny Maseko, however, downplayed the incident as an “oil spill” when asked for comment earlier today.

According to a source, the surrounding buildings have been evacuated as emergency response teams battled the blaze.

Emergency services were dispatched after an emergency alarm was triggered by smoke, following the spill.

According to an internal source there was an oil spill, which then resulted in the fire.

Maseko says no damage was caused to the unit. She also told the newspaper that remaining units are generating.

The safety risk management department of Duvha is investigating the blaze.

Maseko could not be reached for further comment after initially denying the fire.

The Eskom national spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha told the Witbank News that the fire has since been contained and the power utility is investigating the root cause of the fire.
