The City of Ekurhuleni has marked Youth Month by celebrating the Ekurhuleni Public Employment Programme, which has recorded 9 677 work opportunities in the current financial year.

The city noted that the programme plays an important role in addressing unemployment, supporting households and creating meaningful opportunities for residents across Ekurhuleni.

Through the programme, young people are given workplace exposure and practical experience through placements in various municipal departments.

Participants work alongside experienced professionals while receiving mentorship and job-shadowing opportunities in fields such as pharmacy services, roads and stormwater management, administration, mechanical services and other critical municipal functions.

The city said the programme also equips participants with practical skills, workplace discipline and experience that can improve their future employability and open pathways to sustainable careers.

One of the programme beneficiaries, Mxolisi Buthelezi, is serving as a mechanical assistant at the city’s Kempton Park mechanical workshop.

As part of his daily responsibilities, Buthelezi assists mechanics and artisans with mechanical repairs, servicing and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, pumps and tools.

His duties also include preparing work areas, maintaining workshop cleanliness, using hand tools and basic mechanical equipment, assisting with inspections and testing of mechanical systems, compiling reports and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety standards.

Reflecting on his experience, Buthelezi said the programme has given him practical exposure to the mechanical field, strengthened his technical skills and taught him the importance of teamwork, responsibility and workplace safety.

“The opportunity allowed me to gain hands-on experience working alongside skilled mechanics and artisans. I have learnt valuable technical and professional skills that will assist me in building my future career.

“The experience has increased my confidence and improved my understanding of the mechanical services environment,” said Buthelezi.

The city’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini added that the EPEP continues to inspire hope by giving young people access to skills, experience and opportunities that can help them prepare for the world of work.
