Learners thrilled with recycled equipment
Seven hundred learners at Geluksdal Primary School recently received their own backpacks, chair bags and pencil cases, thanks to an innovative programme called Ads to Bags, that transforms old vinyl advertising billboards into funky new school equipment.
Launched by BP South Africa at the beginning of the year, as a way of recycling their old advertising material, Ads to Bags has already benefited thousands of children at 10 other schools across the country.
Geluksdal Primary is the latest school to receive the bright new bags, after deputy principal Suzetta Esbend approached BP.
The equipment was handed over by BP sponsorship and events manager Rabia Metedad.
“Ads to Bags is a little piece of magic,” Esbend said.
“Many of our children don’t have new backpacks; now they have one of their own they can carry to school and home, giving them a sense of pride.
