Brakpan soldier at war
A Brakpan resident was paging through a book on World War Two, when he came across a remarkable photo taken in Italy, in 1944, of a soldier from Brakpan.

The photo appears in the book World War Two 50th Anniversary Commemoration, and the caption reads: On the morning of 28th May 1944, the so-called ‘tobacco factory’ at Carroceto, scene of much bitter fighting, fell to British troops. In this picture, Sergeant E. Newbury of Melbourne, Derbyshire, and Lieutenant E.L. Strauss of Brakpan, Traansvaal, South Africa, are searching the cellars under a block of flats in the area.
The Herald would like to hear from anybody with information regarding Lieutenant Strauss.
