For the love of animals
In just 12 months, the ABC Steri Team has sterilised 1 094 pets.
A local organisation is making a difference in reducing the number of animals who die due to over population and all the other horrendous health risks and associated cruelties that befall unsterilised dogs and cats.
Founded by Brakpan resident Ann Martin, it is the vision of ABC (Animal Birth Control) to sterilise as many dogs and cats as possible and prevent thousands of unwanted animals from ending up in shelters or being euthanased.
Ann has been involved in animal welfare, rescue and rights for 36 years.
The organisation commemorated its one-year anniversary on Sunday and had every reason to celebrate the occasion.

Spaying and neutering animals is simple, effective and saves pets’ lives for generations to come.
ABC assists pensioners and lower income pet owners to sterilise their animals.
A minimal fee is charged for sterilisations and in some cases, they are subsidised by means of donations.
The organisation holds ‘steri days’, where pets are sterilised in a quiet and stress free environment.
On Sunday, 33 cats were sterilised at a pet grooming parlour in Dalview.

With the help of trained veterinary assistants and volunteers, dogs and cats are treated to a ‘spaycation’ and suffer little or no trauma during their experience.
The Steri Team comprises Ann, who is the executive director, Dr Michelle Miller (South African Veterinary Association accredited vet), Dr Carmen Booyse (locum at Paws in Motion), Dr ‘Phantom of the Ops’ (locum at Paws in Motion), Leko Chiya (vet assistant), Gladys King (registration and recovery) and Pascale Glensor (registration and recovery).
Pets are kept warm, dry and pain-free and are constantly monitored after the procedure.
The organisation does not have permanent premises and the team carries out most of its work from a clinic in Alberton.

It does, however, conduct steri days in Brakpan whenever possible and is looking for a local venue.
The organisation is also hoping to acquire a mobile clinic, so that outreach work can be conducted and even more animals can be sterilised.
Residents can assist the organisation by sponsoring or donating towards a sterilisation.
Donations of dog or cat food towards the ABC Feeding Fund are also welcome.
