In the spotlight: Get to know Mallory John du Plooy
Mallory is in the spotlight this week.
Mallory John du Plooy is the principal of Curro Helderwyk School. The Helderwyk Estate resident has been the principal of the local school since June 1, 2017. He is married to Wirett and has three adult sons, Earle, Grant and Ferris.
• Provide a brief description of your career history: Where and when did you start, which subjects did you teach, which grade?
I started my teaching career at George High School in George, Southern Cape, in the previous millennium.
I taught geography and history for Grades 10, 11 and 12 for several years, before being promoted to the position of principal at the same school.
• What inspired you to join this profession?
My father was a teacher and principal, so I followed in his footsteps, so I am basically the second generation of principals.
• How would your learners describe you?
They would probably describe me as an engaging and caring teacher.
• When you were in school, what subject provided the best learning experience for you?
Geography and history.
I also did woodwork, which taught me how to work with my hands. So now I am the resident handyman at home.
• What do you like most about your job?
To share knowledge and enrich the lives of my learners and colleagues.
There is also never a dull moment in my job.
• Is there any advice you would give to a person who is starting out in your chosen career?
Yes, my advice would be to always treat your learners and colleagues with the necessary respect and they will reciprocate accordingly.
• What do you see on the horizon for your line of work?
We, the teaching fraternity, have the obligation to prepare our learners, the leaders of tomorrow, the best that we can.
• Do you have any hobbies or special interests?
I love reading, research and the continuous improvement of the teaching-learning process, ensuring the best outcomes for our learners.
• Who or what inspires you?
Our two Nobel Peace Prize laureates: Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu inspire me.
• What do you feel you have bragging rights to?
Taking Curro Helderwyk from “good to great” – this is work in progress.
• What is your favourite thing about Brakpan?
The friendly people and my acceptance by the learners, staff and parents of Curro Helderwyk.
