VIDEO: Dalpark One focuses on the environment
“The event was a huge success and the association is already planning a follow-up event.”
The Dalpark Extension One Residents Association hosted an Environment Awareness Day – a first of its kind in Brakpan – in the suburb on Saturday.
The residential area is home to the Dalpark One Bird Sanctuary, which is a legally proclaimed and registered bird sanctuary.
Over and above the abundant bird life and fish in the area, there are also mongooses, meerkats, a large variety of reptiles and confirmed reports of duiker, jackal and wildcat.

The Owl Rescue Centre, The African Snakebite Institute, Reptile and Wildlife Rescue, Wild Serve, Brakpan SPCA, Wildlife in Crisis and Prestige Dive School, supported the event.
Each made a valuable contribution in educating people in their fields of speciality.
The SPCA shared knowledge on the proper care of pets, and how to follow proper pet adopting procedures.

They also had emergency poison kits available for sale.
Children got to help paint a banner while learning about the environment and a plastic recycling project was launched in support of The Owl Rescue Centre’s plastic recycling project.
The recycled plastic is used to make owl boxes, bat boxes and beehives.
The African Snakebite Institute, along with Reptile and Wildlife Rescue, provided insight into venomous and non-venomous snakes, common snakes in the area and how to identify them.

Reptile Rescue further entertained children during an interaction session with bearded dragons and a boa constrictor.

Prestige Dive School created awareness of the ocean and the impact humans have on it.
The business supports Mission Deep Blue, an ecology programme launched by SSI (Scuba Schools International) which focuses on coral loss, shark finning and plastic pollution.
“For the first time in Dalpark Extension One history all the preservation and animal protection agencies present met in a conducive environment, networking, sharing information and ideas encouraging cooperation,” said Bart Zaayman, PRO of the Dalpark Extension One Residents Association.
“The event was a huge success and the association is already planning a follow-up event for the first quarter of next year.”
