In the Spotlight

Get to know Diane Burger.

Diane Burger (53) is the manager at the East Rand Children’s Haven Charity Shop. She is married to Warren (51) and the couple, who live in Brenthurst, have three children Jennifer (33), Devan (30) and Ethan (15).

  • How long have you been the manager of the East Rand Children’s Haven Charity shop?

I started in June 2019.

  • The shop is an important source of income for the ERCH. What can people find in the shop?

Books for the bookworms, household goods, toys, clothes for everyone, in a good condition. Shoes as well.

  • The public donates goods to the shop. What is the most interesting item you have ever received?

Nothing springs to mind immediately. I love going through toys. Kids have the nicest things to play with.

  • What are the business hours of the shop?

On a Monday to Friday we open at 8.30am and close at 3pm. We are also open on the first Saturday of the month.

  • How did you become involved with the ERCH?

A good friend of mine is the social worker at the ERCH and I began as a volunteer. The rest, as they say, is history.

  • Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

Can your grandkids be considered a hobby? I also love to read.

  • The year 2020 has been a difficult one so far. The charity shop also had to close its doors for some time. How do you stay positive?

While the shop was closed I became very despondent, but once we opened again it was heartening to see so many customers just coming in to say hello.

I stay positive being surrounded by positive people.

  • Who or what inspires you?

Strong leaders who give of themselves; and there are so many in Brakpan.

  • If you could witness any event of the past, present or future, what would it be and why?

The day when Covid-19 is over and we can all have a huge braai in the streets with our neighbours.

  • If you had the power to solve one and only one problem in the world, what would it be and why?

I would like to make sure all kids got a proper start in life to be safe, fed and taught common sense and respect for their fellow human beings.

  • What is your favourite food?

My favourite food is chocolate. Chocolate anything!
