Bunny Park re-opens to the public
The city has spent R16-million in the last three financial years on the upgrading of the park.
The long wait to the re-opening of the Bunny Park in Benoni finally came to a pleasant end when the park’s gates officially opened to the public on Friday, last week.
Executive mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni Clr Mzwandile Masina together with MMC for Environment Resources and Waste Management Services Ald Makhosazana Mabaso officially declared the Bunny Park re-opened to the public following extensive renovations at the park.
The city has spent R16-million in the last three financial years on the upgrading of the park.
The upgrade includes an entrance gate, a parking area, two ablutions blocks, a store room, eight animal shelters, 10ha new lawn and grazing pastures, dredging of all three dams, walk ways, an irrigation system, fencing, a children play area and a picnic area.
This family-friendly facility will see patrons enjoying various amenities inside the park, such as a view of bouncing bunnies and many other farm animals such as goats, sheep, geese and pigs.
During his address at the opening of the park, Masina pleaded with residents of Ekurhuleni to be the custodians of the park, to guard it against vandalism and to ensure that no form of social ills take place inside and around the park.
“Today we open this park as part of implementing one of our many standing commitments of promoting social cohesion through recreational facilities. We anticipate that this park will also encourage racial harmony in this community. This park is for all residents of Benoni and the entire city,” said Masina.
Furthermore, Tanya Forest-Smith, the founder of Bunny Park Rescue Group, could not contain her excitement during the official opening.
“It is an emotional day for me today, especially when I remember how hard we pleaded with the municipality to improve the state of the Bunny Park. Today, I’m overjoyed seeing the bunnies moving freely in a beautiful and safe park. I thank the leadership of the City and the community of Benoni for being committed to this good cause,” said Forest-Smith.
Entrance to the Bunny Park is free and alcohol is not allowed.
It is open Monday to Sunday from 8am to 4pm.
