Robbers gunned down after robbery at mall

Cases of business robbery and attempted murder are under investigation.

The hustle and bustle of shoppers going about their business at Mall@Carnival on Sunday were interrupted by the sound of gunfire.

A jewellery store in the mall was robbed by a gang of seven men at around 13:00.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the robbers, two of whom were armed with pistols, entered the store, demanded jewellery and assaulted a shop assistant.

They left the store with a bag of jewellery and exited the mall through entrance one, firing shots as they fled.

The gang ran into trouble when they were spotted by an off-duty police reservist who was in the parking area.

He fired at the robbers, assisted by a security guard who also shot at the men.

Brakpan police arrived shortly thereafter and the shoot-out continued. Two of the robbers were fatally shot and a third was injured.

He was taken to the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg and later succumbed to his injuries.

The remaining robbers were able to make a getaway and fled the scene in a white Kia Rio.

The stolen jewellery was recovered on the scene, along with a 9mm pistol and a 7.65mm pistol.

Cases of business robbery and attempted murder are under investigation.
