Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to Brakpan police from February 10 to 12.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – The driver of a delivery vehicle with a cargo of copper cables was robbed at gunpoint and assaulted by two men along Beechwood Street in Dalpark. The driver was stationary at a set of traffic lights along Heidelberg Road at around 08:10 when a ‘beggar’ approached him and asked for food.

The man then pointed a gun at the driver and told him to open the door. The gunman was joined by a second man who had climbed out of a Toyota Corolla parked on the roadside. They both got into the driver’s vehicle and told him to drive to Beechwood Street.

Once they reached their destination, the pair assaulted the driver and robbed him of his personal and work cellphones. They also took the copper cables which were to be delivered.

• A Dalpark Ext Five woman was robbed in her Baobab Street home at 12:30. Groceries had just been delivered to the victim’s home and she had left the front door open and the security gate pushed closed while she went inside the house to pack the items away.

When she returned to lock the security gate and close the front door, she found a man standing at the door.
He opened the security gate, grabbed her by the hand and took her to her sons’ bedrooms where he demanded clothes.

He told her what he wanted and selected name-brand clothing. The intruder then demanded money and took the woman to her bedroom. After giving him cash, the robber locked the women in her room.

She heard him talking on the phone and asking, “Where are you?”. After not hearing any movement in the house, the woman sought help. It was discovered the robber fled with only the money and had left the clothing behind.

• A home in McMillan Avenue, Sherwood Gardens, was burgled of a TV, sound system, DVD player and an amplifier.

Saturday – A car battery, cables and car spares were stolen from a vehicle parked along Siding Avenue.

Sunday – A smash-and-grab was reported along Heidelberg Road near Dalpark. The incident took place at around 18:00.

A female motorist was stationary at the traffic lights when a lone robber smashed the vehicle’s passenger side window and grabbed the woman’s handbag on the seat. The bag contained the victim’s purse with bank cards and cash, her spectacles, wedding rings and a set of keys.

• A case of attempted murder was opened after a man was shot by the occupants of a black Mercedes-Benz on the N17 highway near Dalpark. The victim was a passenger in a car driven by his friend.

The pair was approaching the traffic lights near the highway off-ramp at around 20:00 when the Mercedes stopped in front of their vehicle. The driver swerved around the Mercedes and sped off.

Gunshots rang out and the driver’s friend called out, stating he had been shot. The driver raced off to seek medical attention for his bleeding friend and noticed the Mercedes still in pursuit. He managed to evade the attackers and drove his friend to the Far East Rand Hospital.

• A TV was stolen during a burglary at a home along Kaapmuiden Street in Leachville.
