Be on the lookout for fake cash

The use of counterfeit money in Brakpan is on the increase.

Brakpan police have cautioned local businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit money following a spike in the circulation of fake cash.

According to Brakpan SAPS communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi, several reports from more than one business about false currency were reported to police within a short period of time.

She confirmed some case dockets have been opened in connection with the incidents.

Buthelezi told the Herald that petrol stations are targeted in particular by perpetrators paying with fake cash.

“We plead with the community to not nurture such ominous behaviour and to report all illicit activities instantly to the police,” she said.

Business proprietors are advised to educate their staff on how to spot whether money is real or fake.

Community members who come into possession of counterfeit cash are also urged to immediately report it to SAPS.
