Service centre provides heaps of fun for elderly

The Eric Holdtman Service Centre in the Tweedy Park Complex at 21 Wanderers Street provides a host of activities and services to pensioners.

Any pensioners that receive a Sassa grant can get a membership at the centre for only R50 a year. With that membership, you can take part in the activities and use the services, as well as get a discount on meals prepared by the centre.

Meals for members are R20 per plate. Meals are ordered before 09:00 on the day and can be picked up from the centre between 12:00 and 14:00.

Meals are also available for non-member pensioners at R50 a plate. Another service the centre is providing is a basic healthcare service.

They do general medical check-ups, including measuring your blood sugar, blood pressure, heart rate and blood oxygen levels.

They also provide transport for collecting chronic medication at hospitals or clinics, or if you can’t travel they pick up your medication on your behalf using your clinic card.

The centre also has a library with a variety of books available, many of them Christian literatures, and has had to sell books in the past because they ran out of space.

The library is open Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays from 09:00 to 11:00.

Activities held throughout the week include Bible study on Mondays between 09:00 and 11:00, carpet bowling on Tuesdays between 10:00 and 13:00 and Fridays between 09:00 and 11:00, and Bingo on Wednesdays between 09:00 and 11:00.

They also provide exercise activities on Thursdays from 09:00 to 11:00, and “Knit and Nat” on Fridays from 10:00 to 13:00.

Games, which include darts, chess, board games, card games and jigsaw puzzles, can be played throughout the week in the games room.
