The Hospice East Rand Santa Toy Fair on November 4 was a success as residents came in numbers to purchase affordable Christmas gifts for their loved ones.
The organisation enjoyed overwhelming support from the public as within the first hour they reduced the bounty of toys and teddies on display to a handful.
Residents rushed to take advantage of the affordable prices.
The organiser of the event, Carol Simoni, said the country’s economic situation made it difficult for residents to afford Christmas gifts for their children.
Simoni said although the event was a success, it does not sit well with her, knowing some families cannot afford Christmas presents for their loved ones.

“Many people this year would not be able to give their children what they gave them last year. And some are not in a position to give them anything.
“There are so many impoverished people and many have lost their jobs. I don’t like the thought of any child not having a gift on Christmas day,” she said.
Simoni said they raised over R15 000 from the event. All the proceeds will go to the Hospice. She thanked all those who donated the toys and urged the public to continue helping the organisation.
“This event makes the public aware that we are still alive and thriving. The public can bring us toys at any time. I prepare for this event in January.”
