Kitchen serves up festive fun

The event treated around 250 children to a fun day.

The Serve Kitchen, a local soup kitchen run by more than 20 local businesses, held a Christmas party for less fortunate children on November 25 on the lawn next to the old Brakpan Bowling Club.

Preparations were made for 400 children, with 1 000 hotdogs, 500 gifts, lucky packets, popcorn, drinks and sweets. Around 250 arrived for the party that was arranged in less than two months.

The children were treated to a visit from Santa Claus, portrayed by Dawie Swart, who came in with his bag of gifts on a decorated green truck, instead of the usual sleigh.

Children danced along to Christmas music and called for Santa by singing loudly and cheering. At first, the Serve Kitchen didn’t have a Santa, until Dawie, a stranger, offered to play the role for them.

The kitchen thanked all affiliate companies and individual donors for their support in arranging the party on such short notice.
