It is important to know how to drive a manual car regardless of the recent shift to automatic automobiles.

In many parts of the world, manual transmissions are losing popularity. In South Africa, however, manual transmissions are still used in over half of all new automobile sales.

Given the South African market, it makes sense to learn how to drive a manual vehicle, even if automatics are quicker to use.

In recent years, the percentage of new automobiles sold in Europe and the United States with manual transmissions has dropped dramatically. In 2000, 89-95% of all new automobiles sold in Europe had manual transmissions.

However, in the first half of 2023, just 32% of new automobiles were sold with a manual transmission. Similarly, less than 1% of cars in the United States have had manual transmissions over the last two years.
