EMPD tip of the week

It is prohibited to erect a tent on a public road.

According to municipal by-laws, the erection of a tent for a funeral, wedding, party or other gathering on a road that is used by the public is prohibited.

Section 119 Sub-section 5 states: ‘obscuring the view of a road or traffic on such a road by any road user’ is prohibited, and Section 115 sub-section 8, states ‘attaching any object to a structure, pavement, tree, parking meter, lamp pole, electric pole, telephone booth, post box, traffic sign, bench or any other street furniture in or on a public road or public place’ is prohibited.

A public road is utilised by the public, pedestrians and motorists, and their rights must not be infringed.

To report any infringement of these by-laws, contact the EMPD’s call centre on 011 999 3425.
