A vehicle spring clean must include a service
Follow these tips when servicing your car for optimal performance.
Spring is here! The weather is great, and it is time to get rolling to scenic picnic spots, outdoor concerts, or family a few hours out of town.
The dusty and windy days of August are behind us and we can start thinking about that well-deserved break in December.
The Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), an association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), says if you are already feeling beach sand between your toes under the ‘bored’room table, bear in mind your car may feel as frazzled as you are.
Dewald Ranft, chairperson of MIWA, says now is the time to spring clean your car inside and out and also under the bonnet with that all-important service at an accredited workshop.
“Spring cleaning is not only about thoroughly cleaning your car; it must also include a service. A shiny clean car would not mask the engine and other problems.
“While it is good to have basic knowledge of your car and to carry out repairs if necessary, there are certain car repairs you should leave to the experts at an accredited workshop.
“Two of the most important considerations about taking on repairs beyond your ability are that this could jeopardise future insurance claims and your warranty,” says Ranft.
He adds a full vehicle check-up at an accredited workshop also has the benefit of identifying problems early before they become more serious and costly.
These are some of the most important components a good workshop will check during a service to ensure peace of mind when you go on a road trip:
• Wheel alignment: Make sure your wheels and tyres are correctly aligned as it allows for a balanced ride – tyre wear and no pulling towards the left or right. Also, a properly aligned car gets better mileage and has a longer lifespan.
• Tyre rotation and balancing: This can prolong the lifespan of tyres as it ensures even wear on the treads, which also equals a smoother, safer ride.
• Oil: Maintaining regular oil changes is a key part of extending the life of your engine.
• Brakes: A brake check involves making sure all the components that allow you to stop your vehicle safely and immediately are functioning properly. This is a must for ensuring safe driving, especially when something unexpected happens in front of you and you must brake within seconds to avoid an accident.
• Battery: A car battery inspection ensures your battery can hold the charge and start your car. It is not worth neglecting to check this because you could get stranded on the side of the road with a flat battery.
• Fuel injection: This is a professional cleaning of the fuel injector to remove carbon deposits and debris that may block the system and restore your car’s performance.
• Wiper blades: Your safety behind the wheel depends on having a clear and unrestricted view of the road ahead, and with a dirty windscreen, that safety becomes compromised. Checking the condition of your wiper blades should be part of your spring check.
Ranft concludes that a proper spring clean of your vehicle does more than make it look good. It can also extend the life of the upholstery and other interior features, which could increase the resale value.
“If you are not keen on getting the bucket, sponges, tyre polish and vacuum out yourself, remember a good workshop will have your car shiny and spotless when you pick it up from its service.”
