Hijackers posing as ‘passengers’ target e-hailing driver

The driver was threatened at gunpoint.

An e-hailing driver fell victim to hijackers masquerading as passengers on December 2.

According to police information, the driver received a request for a ride at around 22:00 and proceeded to an address along Malandela Street in Tsakani to pick up two men.

As they were travelling along Heidelberg Road (R23), towards Carnival City, one of the men pointed a gun at the driver and told him to pull over.

After stopping the vehicle, the driver was forced to the back seat, where his hands were tied with rope and his face was covered with a jacket.

He was driven around for some time and then placed in a different vehicle, where he was robbed of his cellphone, shoes and R300 in cash.

It was not disclosed where and when the driver was released. The stolen vehicle is a silver-coloured Suzuki.
A case of hijacking was opened at the Brakpan Police Station.
