Brakpan parkrun grows since move to sports grounds

The event is gaining more participants, much to the excitement of the event co-ordinator.

The Brakpan parkrun saw 30 runners and walkers attend the most recent event on the grounds of the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre on February 22.

That is almost 10 new participants, as the event starts to grow.

In the past, the event took place on the municipal grounds across the street, next to the Jan Smuts Dam, but many participants complained about the long grass, difficult course and unkempt terrain.

The new course is better maintained, and event co-ordinator Madalane Bekker works hard to ensure it is a fun, challenging and engaging course.

The three top runners were:
• Karel Swanepoel, first in 21:54;

• Willem Bekker, second in 24:28;

• Bongiwe Simelane, third in 27:17.

The event still needs more volunteers to help monitor the course and help participants. To sign up, call Madalane on 069 868 7912.
