Brakpan SAPS clamp down on illegal liquor trade

Compliance in focus at liquor traders meeting.

Local liquor traders were issued a stern warning by Brakpan police that lawlessness in liquor outlets will not be tolerated.

They were cautioned during the liquor outlets quarterly meeting hosted by local SAPS in the boardroom of the police station on April 9.

Liquor and second-hand goods officers Sergeants Priscilla Kunene and Sibusiso Mavuso steered the meeting, with support from Vispol commander Colonel Robert Makopo and Vispol support head Lieutenant Colonel Pearl Van Staad.

Legal trade was the highest priority issue to be discussed, and attendees were reminded that licences and certificates should always be visibly displayed.

Trading times were emphasised as per the type of business – bottle stores operate from 08:00 to 20:00 during the week, and taverns from 10:00 to 02:00.

Liquor traders were advised to follow the correct process when changing ownership, and were further informed that a trading license is not transferable.

Kunene emphasised that trade is prohibited without a licence, even if the application and all relevant documents have been submitted.

It was also stated that the SAPS will have no mercy on any person found to be in contravention of the liquor laws. Police have appealed to all local liquor outlet owners to attend future meetings for their own benefit and to ensure they comply to avoid being penalised or even closed.
