Young Brakpan racer shows grit and growth in SA Short Circuit Series
With two heat wins and a commanding lead in his final race, the Brakpan lad proved he's one to watch on the junior racing circuit.
Eight-year-old Liam Smith from Brakpan impressed in Round 3 of the SA Short Circuit Series, claiming two heat wins in the PW50 class and showing strong progress in the SM50 category.
The third instalment of the series took place on May 31 in Vereeniging. In the PW50 class, Liam ended qualifying in third place which meant he would start in this position during the first heat.
Liam had a quick pull away and managed to overtake the other riders. He moved into second place after the first corner and held on to finish in that position after a close race.
In the second heat, Liam started in second place. With a quick pull away once again, Liam took an early lead into the first corner and managed to stay at the front of the pack the entire race. This win saw Liam starting in first place during heat 3.
Out of the first corner, Liam had a fair gap between him and the riders behind him. With sharp skills and unstoppable energy, he secured a comfortable win.
Next up was the SM50 class. This event was Liam’s third race in this class, and this is his development year on the bigger bike.
According to his mom Amy, Liam showed great improvement lap after lap. He finished in the SM50 class in sixth place.
