Woman arrested for alleged shooting in Derby Avenue car confrontation

A 44-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly shooting a man in Brakpan on Tuesday. Police recovered a firearm near the scene, and the victim was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound.

A 47-year-old man was shot on Tuesday after confronting a woman he found in his car. The shooting took place at an address along Derby Avenue at around 10:30.

A 44-year-old woman was arrested shortly afterwards and faces charges of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

Constable Audrey Buthelezi, Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer, told the Brakpan Herald that police were summoned to the scene and found the victim with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen.

“The wounded man alleged that he found a woman in his car, and when he confronted her, the woman pulled out a firearm and shot him,” explained Buthelezi.

Brakpan SAPS arrested the suspect and seized the weapon believed to be used.

“The man further told the police that he knew the woman who shot him. Police members started searching for the suspect based on the description provided by the victim, who was then taken to the nearest hospital by paramedics.

“Within a short while, the police found the suspect, and a 9mm Norinco pistol with an empty magazine was found hidden next door to the crime scene.

“One empty cartridge was found on scene.”

The woman was detained at the Brakpan Police Station, and the firearm, empty magazine, a black holster and the cartridge were seized and booked in for forensic purposes.

Buthelezi confirmed the woman appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where the case was postponed to June 23.

She remains in custody.
