Brakpan police probe two hijackings in one day

Two hijackings in Brakpan on October 23 left victims shaken after being abducted and abandoned in remote areas.

The driver of a white Mahindra Pik-Up was hijacked near Mall@Carnival on October 23 after being approached by a hijacker posing as someone in need of a lift.

According to police information, the victim was travelling along Airport Drive en route to Boksburg, when, at around 11:30, while stationary at a traffic light, he heard a siren and believed it to be a traffic officer.

He proceeded through the intersection and stopped after the robot. A man then approached the passenger side of the vehicle and requested a lift.

The victim informed the man that he was not travelling in that direction. The man forcefully opened the driver’s door, pointed a knife at the victim, and ordered him to move to the passenger seat.

The knifeman then drove the vehicle to an area near the mall, where they were joined by three other men in another vehicle.

The men forced the victim into their car, covered his face with a jacket, and drove around. He later overheard one of the men say, “We are done,” after which he was driven to an an open area near Zone 7, Meadowlands, and dropped off.

The victim sought assistance from nearby residents, who contacted police. In addition to the bakkie, the hijackers also took three cellphones.

In a separate incident later that evening, a Brenthurst couple was threatened at gunpoint during a hijacking outside their Curtis Street home.

This hijacking took place at about 19:30.

While details remain unclear, it is reported that the husband parked his vehicle outside the gate and was preparing to leave the premises.

As he returned to close the gate, he was suddenly pushed to the ground, and both he and his wife were threatened at gunpoint.

There is no mention of how many hijackers were involved. The husband was then forced into the back seat of his vehicle, where his head was covered with black fabric.

He was later driven to an open field, and left there. The make and model of the hijacked vehicle was also not disclosed. Both cases are under investigation by Brakpan SAPS.
