Car show revs up loads of excitement
A family day to remember at the Brakpan Rugby Club with cars, old and new, on display.
Visitors to the Classic Car Show at the Brakpan Rugby Club on November 8 were spoiled with an array of classic, vintage and custom cars on display.
Showcase vehicles could pull up into the club’s parking lot, while guests and visitors parked along the rugby field.
Lewis Bronkhorst, owner of a Toyota Celica from 1980, explained his vehicle’s original 2l engine is still intact.
Other parts have been replaced during services over the years, but the car is mostly original.
“I like to leave the dents and scratches, it shows the car’s character. The engine is still the same; I didn’t even clean it for today,” said Bronkhorst.
Lewis did not even intend to showcase his car.
He saw cars queuing to enter the parking lot, pulled up to see what was happening, and the car guard directing visitors to the other gate and letting through display vehicles said, “Oh, this one is a classic for sure,” before letting him through.
There was also a van, possibly an old Volkswagen minibus, though the exact make and model was hard to determine, as it was covered from top to bottom in an eclectic mix of decorations, animal skeletal remains, horns, and tusks.

It resembled a vehicle straight out of a Mad Max movie.
The owner couldn’t be located, but the van drew plenty of attention, eliciting reactions ranging from shock and disgust to occasional admiration for its attention to detail.
Some custom builds could be seen, including Mini Coopers, one with a Land Rover chassis to boot, as well as race cars.
Others were all original classic cars, in pristine condition, and looked as they would have decades ago when they were first released.
