Brakpan actor appears on international silver screen
This film about apartheid SA features a Brakpan actor and was released in London on October 1.
Brakpan resident Albert Jansen van Vuuren (60) recently starred in Mrs Plum, a 2025 SA period film based on Ezekiel Mphahlele’s short story.
The film, which premiered in London at the Moviehouse this October, is directed by Nomakhomazi Dewavrin.
Set in SA in 1959, the film delves into the complex relationship between a domestic worker and her liberal employer, portrayed by Alice Krige as Mrs Plum.
It will release on Showmax and KykNet in January.
Jansen van Vuuren, a Hamilton Avenue resident and the national president and founder of the Ghost Riders motorcycle club, played an apartheid policeman harassing the titular character’s domestic worker for her passbook.

“I am proud of myself. It’s an international film, and very few South Africans can say they’ve acted in an international film,” Jansen van Vuuren said.
“It was an unbelievable experience, and people from overseas will see my acting. I was even invited to the premiere in London, but it was too pricey to attend,” he explained.
Filming took place in Durban.
Jansen van Vuuren’s character is named Sergeant Willem Botha, but the name is never mentioned verbally in the film.

Jansen van Vuuren filmed his scenes from October to December 2024. However, filming started in July 2024.
About Krige, Jansen van Vuuren has only good things to say.
”She has such a soft heart and is a good person. In one scene, she sprays the policemen harassing her domestic worker with water from a hosepipe. Before filming, she said, ‘I’m so sorry to have to do this to you’.”
Jansen van Vuuren also joined Christian Kok, who founded the Rising Stars Studios, as co-owner of the studio, and directed a few series and short films of his own.
Two of the titles, Royal Blood and No Way Out, are awaiting distribution contracts with Showmax or KykNet.
