Weltevreden landfill site closed indefinitely due to escalating illegal mining activities
Dangerous confrontations involving illegal miners have prompted the City of Ekurhuleni to halt operations at the local landfill, citing serious risks to workers and the public.
Operations at the Weltevreden landfill site in Brakpan have been halted due to escalating dangerous working conditions resulting from illegal mining activities and territorial clashes between illegal miners and waste reclaimers.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni, due to the imminent and previously violent encounters, the city’s Waste Management Service Business Unit resolved to close the site on December 8 to protect employees and clients from potential harm.
The site will remain closed indefinitely, as the presence of the illegal miners has created an unsafe working environment.
Patrons who usually utilise Weltevreden are advised to use other nearby facilities such as the Rietfontein landfill site in Kwa-Thema, Rooikraal in Dawn Park or Platkop landfill site near Katlehong.
