• Birthday celebration shifts into high gear
Global Female Movement founder Narina Naidoo expressed her gratitude after the organisation hosted a successful birthday celebration for Team Saluki’s Lorenzo ‘Renzo’ and Dewandro ‘Mano’ Dada.

The event, held at The Rock Raceway in Brakpan, saw spinners and spectators from across the country gather to celebrate the brothers in spectacular style.

• Football league ends on a high
The Brakpan Central Local Football Association closed their six-month league season on a high note, awarding massive cash prizes to the top three teams. Young Stars FC finished third, Real Touch took second, and Leachville Shooters claimed the coveted top spot.

• Rising football star shines on screen
A talented young footballer from Dalpark Ext 6 is still basking in the glow of his recent small screen debut.
Liam Kanagan (11), a striker from the Pitso Mosimane Football Club in Boksburg, was featured alongside a select group of rising football stars from the club for a Youth Day special on SuperSport.

• Young dart player to represent Gauteng
Phindile Ndlovu (15) will represent Gauteng at the 2025 South African National Youth Seniors and Masters Darts Championships in KwaZulu-Natal from July 13 to 19.

She started playing darts last yeear and has been excelling in the sport. Ndlovu, from Tsakani, practices in Brakpan.

• Full speed ahead for racing star
All eyes will be on Liam Smith from Brakpan as he continues his championship campaign with grit and skill. The eight-year-old added another impressive result to his name on July 12 when he competed in Round 5 of the SA Short Circuit Series at the iDube Raceway in KwaZulu-Natal.

Racing in the PW50 Class, a consistent performance ensured Liam secured first place overall for the day.

• Nigel hou Brakpan op hul tone
Nigel Rugbyklub het op 26 Julie teen die voorlopers Brakpan Rugbyklub in die Valke Peregine Liga te staan gekom.

Dit is die eerste seisoen wat Nigel in die Valke se strafste liga meeding. Nigel se eerste span het met 61-47 verloor, maar die telling weerspieël nie die volle vereloop van die wedstryd nie. In die ooreenstemmende wedstryd vroeër vanjaar het Brakpan maklik met 63-10 geseëvier.

• Stoeiers kry goud by SAs
Twee van Brakpan Stoeieklub se Bulldogs het aan die SA kampioenskappe by die Menlopark-stoeieklub deelgeneem.

Jacques Kriel het in die freestyle senior 125kg-kategorie sowel as in die Greco-Roman senior 130kg-kategorie albei goud verower. Danie Smit het sy goue medalje ingepalmin die o20-freestyle 92kg-kategorie.

• Darts Association opens new venue
Darts players from all over recently came together at the Deo Volente venue hall in Withok to break in the Ekurhuleni East Darts Association’s new clubhouse.

• Local legend honoured for his dedication to cricket
Cricket South Africa, Eastern’s Cricket, and KFC Mini-Cricket honoured outgoing Brakpan coordinator Logan Naina for 23 years of service to Brakpan, Easterns, and Mini-Cricket.

Naina, who is a Brakpan resident and former local school principal, was recognised during a seminar held in Boksburg on August 15.

• Hattingh chases her rugby dreams
An 11-year-old, who is the only girl on her school’s rugby team and plays flank for Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck and Brakpan Rugby Club, dreams of one day becoming a Springbok player.

Elney Hattingh, from Wright Park in Springs, started playing tag rugby in Grade One, and rugby has become her life.

She started playing for the Brakpan Rugby Club this year and said that the coaches and players welcomed her warmly and were impressed by her skills.

• Boxers show their mettle at exciting tournament
Brakpan Boxing Club hosted a tournament on August 23 at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre for boxing clubs across East Gauteng.

There were 22 matches, some of them show bouts, which provided intense entertainment for supporters. Brakpan has several boxers in the tournament, who fared well in their matches.

September

• Comrades legend pops in at parkrun
Beloved marathon athlete and parkrun SA CEO, Bruce Fordyce, recently visited the Brakpan parkrun. The weekly event buzzed with excitement at the special visit.

• Victors unleash punishing blows
Punisher Slap Fight SA recently held its 14th event in the Big Top Arena at Carnival City, where a title defence and a first title were handed out, among others.

There were 20 fighters competing in 10 fights, with the main event being the heavyweight title fight. Founder and namesake, Bobby ‘The Punisher’ Krisch beat Shaun Scheepers for the heavyweight title in four rounds.

• Golfing duo claim victory
Veronica Tredoux and Jeanette Ross clinched this month’s Ekurhuleni Senior Women’s Golf monthly tournament title at ERPM Golf Club in Boksburg. Tredoux and Ross scored 48 points for their victory.

• Athletes rake in medals
Athletes from the Brakpan Athletics Club recently represented the club at the South African Christian Schools Sports Association Invitational Athletics meet in Germiston. Forty-one athletes from the club participated, raking in 48 medals – 29 gold, eight silver and 12 bronze.

• Karatekas head to world champs
Members of the Dan Triangle Karate Club, under the guidance of instructors Chris and Christopher Anthony, have been awarded their Karatenomichi World Federation South Africa national colours. They will proudly represent South Africa and the upcoming world championships in Japan in October.

• East Rand offices take on the heat in fun run
Brakpan police joined forces with fellow East Rand stations at a fun run/walk hosted by Springs SAPS on September 17, where officers from across the region took part. The event saw participants tackle 5km and 10km routes at the Springs Mine and Military Museum.

• Junior rasieleiers vermaak met skitterende vertoning
Brakpan Rugbyklub se junior rasieleiers het op 27 September by die Valke-jeugtoernooi op Hoërskool Die Anker se rugbyvelde die skare verstom.

Die groep, wat uit jong meisies bestaan, het min voorbereidingstyd gehad. In net omtrent ‘n week het hulle egter die volledige dansroetine bemeester en dit foutloos op die dag uitgevoer.

• Teams bring their A game to tourney
The 2025/2026 pre-season Top 8 Tournament of the Brakpan Central Local Football Association brought “pure passion and football excellence”, according to chairperson Maria Mokola.

Participating teams showcased the best of local talent and team spirit. In a thrilling final match, Real Touch FC went head-to-head with Alliance FC and emerged victorious with a commanding 3-0 win, crowning them the champions.

• Netball tournament raises breast cancer awareness
Legends teams took part in the Abafazi the Legends over 40 netball league finals on October 11 on the netball courts at Hoërskool Stoffberg’s sports grounds.

Twist Real Netball Club hosted the league, which was created in Kempton Park in 2024 for women over 40 to support those who still have a passional for netball but are not accommodated through normal leagues.

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the club saw an opportunity to provide breast cancer awareness and education to participants in the league.

Some speakers had recovered from breast cancer, while educators and flyers demonstrated how to do a breast self-examination, and teams and supporters wore pink. The winners of the league were Umoja Girls.

• Twins victorious in 7.5km run
Brakpan twins Caleb and Megan-Ann Roberts won the men’s and women’s 7.5km fun run titles at the Tommy Malone Memorial Race at Boksburg Stadium on October 19.

The Irun AC athletes led the race from the gun and shot through the finishing straight in single file for their victories.

• Blazers verskyn op die kriekettoneel
Die Brakpan Blazers Krieketklub, gestig deur die voorsitter Nathan Labuschagne vir krieketspelers tussen die ouderdomme van o8 en 014, het aan hulle eerste ligawedstryde op 18 Oktober by Hoërskool Stoffberg deelgeneem. Die o8 Impala-spend het hul wedstryd gewen.

Four athletes from Brakpan’s Unbroken Endurance Training Academy made their mark on the national stage with outstanding performances at the South African Laser Run Championships in Bloemfontein.

The outstanding performances of Donovan van Zyl, Quade McGhee, Dian Barnard, and Arnu Barnard earned them selection to the South African Pentathlon Association’s Laser Run Team.

• Brakpan wen sewestoernooi
Brakpan het op 1 November as die trotse wenners uit die stryd getree tydens Heidelberg Rugbyklub se jaarlikse sewesrugbytoernooi.

Die span het in ’n spanningsvolle eindstryd teen Nigel seëvier nadat hulle naby die einde van die wedstryd ’n beslissende drie gedruk het.

• Chemikè makes a name for herself on the rugby field
Chemikè Visser, a Dalpark resident, was selected for SA Rugby’s U16 Elite Player Development girls’ team, which participated in an intensive development camp in Paarl in October.

Chemikè, a loose forward for the Bulls and a learner at Hoërskool Waterkloof, was selected after a comprehensive scouting process.

• Brakpan Rugbyklub eer spelers vir hul prestasies

Brakpan’s Phoenix Netball Club held a friendly tournament to cap off the year on November 8 at the Hoërskool Stoffberg netball courts.

Teams from far and wide attended to play in the tournament, which had no official first to third place, as well as additional friendly matches afterwards.

• Locals claim world championship glory
Robert Krisch and Pieter Vorster, both known for their slap fighting, are now world champions in their divisions of Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl after competing in Durban on November 3.

• Royal Oak Pro-am team putts into third place
Four golf players from Royal Oak Country Club in Brakpan recently placed third at the PGA Pro-am golfing tournament in Mbombela from November 9 to 11.

One of the players, Christy Raper, played -7 over three rounds of 18 holes each. The other players are pro player Ruben Labuschagne, Shawn Raper and Fritz Tewitz.

December

• Dart players swap boards for greens
The Ekurhuleni East Darts Association held their annual golf day on November 28 to raise funds for the association and the development of darts as a sport.
Golf was played on the greens of the Springs Country Club, with players going for the best score.

• Members play for keeps
Brakpan Pool Club hosted another cash game recently, a race to five challenge between Santie Ripke and Bianca Mathyser, which was won by Bianca with a score of 5-4.

• Koekemoer honoured with top junior award
The fastest U20 400m athlete in the world, Leendert Koekemoer, ended a successful year in style after receiving the top junior accolade at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) awards at Melrose Arch on December 7.

The 18-year-old sprinting sensation from Dalview was named the CGA junior male athlete of the year to end an incredible record-breaking, medal-filled season.

• Sensei moves up the ranks at grading ceremony
Students of the Shotokan Karate Club in Brakpan were recently graded to the next level, while their sensei, Lolia Basa, now a shihan, was awarded fifth Dan black belt. Shihan is a step above a sensei in martial arts.

• Junior biker triumphant
Motorbike racer Liam Smith from Brakpan ended the year on a high note with a major milestone. The nine-year-old recently took part in the final round of the SA Short Circuit Series in the PW50 class in Vereeniging.

Liam began the day with a 56-point lead over second place, meaning he only needed 20 points to secure the championship.

With three heats scheduled for the day, he started strong, finishing second in the first heat and effectively clinching the championship.

This is only Liam’s second year of racing, and it is the second consecutive year he has ended the season with a trophy.

• EEDA honours top dart players
The Ekurhuleni East Darts Association (EEDA) held its annual prize-giving on December 6 to honour players for their achievements throughout the year.

The event was held at the association’s new venue in Withok, unveiled earlier this year. The Ekurhuleni East Masters and Ekurhuleni East Darts Associations’ awards were handed out, including trophies for the association’s trophy night competitions.
