Cash-in-transit van ambushed in Withok

The robbers bombed the vehicle.

A gang of robbers ambushed a cash-in-transit vehicle in Withok Estates on Friday evening (March 31).

About R30 000 was taken after the vehicle was bombed.

According to Brakpan police, the heist took place at around 17:30.

The van’s driver and a colleague were travelling from Tsakani after collecting cash in the area.

As the driver turned from 12th Road into Vlakfontein Road, he heard gunshots.

A black BMW X5 stopped in front of the van blocking its path and a white Mazda BT-50 bakkie pulled up from behind.

Men armed with rifles started shooting at the van, and the driver and his colleague were ordered to get out.

The van’s  back doors were bombed open and the robbers helped themselves to the money. The van subsequently caught alight.

The driver was robbed of his firearm, and the robbers fled in the BMW and Mazda.

The driver and his colleague sustained no injuries.

The robbery is under investigation by Brakpan SAPS.

The van’s driver and his colleague were unharmed in the incident.
