Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from September 22 to 24.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A man walking along Escombe Avenue was robbed by a lone thief at 11:30.

The thief made off with victim’s jewellery valued at almost R70 000. The stolen jewellery included bracelets and rings.

• Batteries were stolen from two vehicles in separate incidents. The first was stolen from a vehicle parked at the corner of Kitzinger and Prince George avenues at around 12:30 and the second from a car parked at an address on Queen Avenue at about 17:00.

• A 48kg gas bottle mounted to an exterior wall at a home along Victoria Falls Road was stolen.

• A generator was stolen from a property in Gladstone Avenue.

• More than R15 000 was stolen from a woman’s bank account. It is suspected her bank card was switched at an ATM in Dalview.

The victim’s daughter attempted to withdraw cash from the ATM at around 10:00 but the ATM’s screen froze.

She then attempted to make a withdrawal from another ATM nearby and was notified the account was restricted.

The victim received notifications later that day about transactions being made on her account. She then blocked the card.

• Two Big Boy scooters were stolen from a home in Recreation Way, Anzac.

Saturday – A woman was robbed of R1 000 after a fraudster switched her bank card at an ATM along Voortrekker Road. The incident took place at about 13:15.

The victim was standing in a queue at the ATM when the man standing next to her started explaining to her how to use the ATM.

She told him she knew how to withdraw money and inserted her card and punched in the pin, unaware that her card had already been swapped.

The man quickly walked away and fled in a Mercedes-Benz. The victim was then notified that money had been withdrawn from her account.

Sunday – A bicycle was stolen from a Prince George Avenue home. A suspect was arrested in connection with the theft.
