Brakpan police and stakeholders commemorated Mandela Day by providing soup and bread to 30 homeless people, demonstrating the spirit of Ubuntu.

The initiative, held on July 15, was driven by a commitment to uphold the values Mandela championed and contribute to social change.

According to Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi, local police and stakeholders participated in the initiative to honour Madiba’s legacy of dedication to human rights and social justice, while encouraging community members to reflect on their own contributions to these values.

“The objective was also to create a platform for community engagement, encourage community members to take action, inspire change, and foster a sense of agency and responsibility,” said Buthelezi.

“The SAPS, together with stakeholders, highlighted the importance of Mandela Day through action and community engagement, reflecting Mandela’s values and principles.”

Soup and bread were served to homeless people next to the Charl Baard Stadium, at the corner of Prince George and Gardiner avenues.

A short prayer and spiritual encouragement were led by Hillary Lukhele from Uyasiphumelelisa (NPO).

“Interactive conversations, words of comfort and encouragement formed part of the outreach as beneficiaries received their meals,” said Buthelezi.

“The homeless people who received the warm meal expressed their appreciation for the initiative and the efforts of the SAPS and stakeholders.”

The stakeholders involved were Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications office, Youth Crime Prevention Desk, EMPD social crime prevention unit, Ekurhuleni Women’s Directorate office, Department of Social Development, Far East Rand Hospital Crisis Centre, Kingsway Clinic, Village of Hope (NPO), Uyasiphumelelisa (NPO), Department of Community Safety, Gauteng Traffic wardens, CPF, Siyabangena patrollers, and Department of Social Services.
