The San Michele Home in Withok Estates provides its residents with a home, a purpose and a future.

“For eight decades, San Michele has been a place of care, dignity, belonging and opportunity for people living with intellectual and physical disabilities,” says Jenny van Graan, the home’s marketing manager.

San Michele provides a safe and loving home for about 236 residents, many of whom have been abandoned by their families or have nowhere else to go.

Caring for every resident
“Our residents have different abilities and care needs, and many require ongoing assistance and specialised support,” says Van Graan.

Support in place at the home includes:

• Around-the-clock nursing care.
• Personal care and daily assistance.
• Specialised therapy and support.
• A safe and caring living environment.
• Nutritious meals and daily essentials.
• Encouragement, companionship and emotional support.
• Activities that promote independence, confidence and participation.

“Our dedicated team works around the clock to ensure that every resident receives the care, respect and dignity they deserve,” says Van Graan.

Life beyond care
“At San Michele, we believe that life is more than just meeting basic needs. Our residents are encouraged to participate, socialise, learn, create and have fun,” Van Graan explains.

San Michele offers sports programmes, with some residents competing in the Special Olympics, bodybuilding competitions and more.

The home offers soccer, netball and bodybuilding, which grows their confidence, friendships and sense of achievement.

Music therapy brings the residents joy, encourages expression, and creates opportunities for residents to connect with others.

Occupational therapy and creative activities help residents develop skills, express themselves and accomplish goals.

With several religious organisations providing services, spiritual welfare is provided for, bringing comfort, connection and community. Holidays and special events are also celebrated.

Your support changes lives
Government subsidies and disability grants do not cover all the costs involved in providing the level of care the residents need.

“San Michele relies heavily on the generosity of individuals, families, schools, businesses, trusts, foundations and community organisations,” says Van Graan.

Your support can help provide food, clothing, shoes, bedding, toiletries, medical and nursing supplies, therapy resources, sporting equipment, maintenance and facility improvement, and activities.
