Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi handed over sanitary pads to local beneficiaries on September 11.

The pads were donated at the local SAPS 5km fun walk and aerobics event held in Brakpan on August 29. Buthelezi was supported by Brakpan CPF interim chairperson Simon Mabuse during the handover.

Also in attendance were several pad donors, alongside representatives from Harcourts Real Estate, the Greater Brakpan Scholar Transport Association and the Brakpan Education Service Cooperative.

The beneficiaries were Brakpan Primary School, Anzac Primary School and Laerskool Brakpan Oos.

Each school had a representative to receive the donation. Ninety packets of sanitary pads went to each school, totalling 270 packets handed over.

“The SAPS initiative to provide sanitary pads to schools supports education, ensuring girls can attend school without fear of stigma and harassment related to menstrual hygiene issues,” says Buthelezi.

“It also supports the girl learners’ health and hygiene, as poor menstrual hygiene can lead to health issues such as urogenital infections.

“This initiative empowers girls by providing them with the necessary tools to manage their periods with dignity and confidence, which can lead to increased participation in school.”

The commitment of Brakpan SAPS to this cause demonstrates its dedication to supporting the community and ensuring girls have the opportunity to pursue their education and lead healthy lives.

The school representatives appreciated the SAPS initiative and thanked the donors.
