Jackie Reilly (39), from the Democratic Alliance, is the new councillor for Ward 31 in Brakpan. Jackie lives in Sunward Park, Boksburg, and has two daughters, aged two and six. Ward 31 comprises Dalpark Proper and Extensions (excluding Dalpark Extension One), Leachville, Tamboville and a portion of Sunward Park.
• What are your immediate plans for the ward?
In addition to the ordinary service delivery concerns raised by residents to the DA during the recent local government elections, plans have been put in place to meet with the different communities.
This will allow me to engage with residents and further their service delivery needs.
The DA will also collaborate with the community and business to achieve the mandates as set out in our manifesto.
Comprehensive assessment of where projects and ward plans are within the Integrated Development Plan will be conducted.
• What are the duties of a ward councillor?
The job of a DA councillor in a local council is to represent the voters, on behalf of voters, and to represent the DA to the voters in an effective and visible manner, both in the council and in his/her ward.
To assist in addressing the needs of the community concerned.
• There is a lot of development going on in Brakpan. Where do you see the town in five years?
The development in Brakpan and ward alike is encouraging for job creation and business development, which our town sorely needs.
As the councillor, I will ensure that businesses adheres to set council policies and regulations and that employment is centred around the local community.
• For how long have you been a member of the DA?
I was a member of the then Democratic Party, and thus the Democratic Alliance since 2000.
I have been bestowed a position of Alderman for my years of service as a councillor in Ekurhuleni.
• What sparked your interest in politics?
I have always been an activist in fighting for human rights, the rights of animals and the environment and thus politics was a natural choice.
• What would your legacy be known for 20 years from now?
I contributed to the building of South Africa.
• Do you have any hobbies or special interests?
I love good food and wine, art and design.
• Name the contents of your handbag.
I do not have a handbag.
• If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be?
To see the Democratic Alliance become the government of South Africa in the very near future and ensure that we all live in a non-racial South Africa.
