News of yesteryear

Stories that made headlines in Brakpan's history.

• Eaten alive

A domestic worker and her year-old grandson were eaten alive by two pit bull terriers in the garden of a house in Hastings Avenue on Tuesday morning.

The baby died at the Johannesburg Hospital on Tuesday night and the 53-year-old woman is in a critical condition.

Neighbours and passersby stood watching helplessly as the dogs were devouring the woman’s legs.

The child lay seriously injured only metres away.

A bloodstained path showed where the dogs had dragged his grandmother to a carport.

She had tried in vain to protect the child from the attack.

The dogs were shot dead, both covered in the blood of their victims.

The woman’s legs were ripped to shreds down to the bones and the child was savaged all over his body.

They were both airlifted to the Johannesburg Hospital.

• Warning to East Rand business community

A crime syndicate is targeting East Rand businesses, getting money by forged documentation.

The targets of these men are clothing stores and retail outlets.

Information was received from a source that the group would strike soon at a specific clothing store on the East Rand.

A trap was set for them to collect goods valued at R78 000.

They arrived with the correct documentation and were allowed to leave the premises.

The group was later apprehended, while loading goods into a getaway vehicle.

This particular group was linked to thefts from several East Rand clothing stores and the value of goods lost to date is estimated to be several hundred thousand rands.

The business community is advised to be vigilant when handing over goods.

They should look at the documentation carefully, to ensure they are correct.
