Public transport during COVID-19: What you need to know
As of 2 April 2020, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs amended the regulations regarding public transport during the nation lockdown imposed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Public transport services such as passenger rail services, bus services, taxi services, e-hailing services, maritime and air passenger transport for non-essential purposes are prohibited during this time.
Only bus services, taxi services, e-hailing services and private motor vehicles necessary for purposes of rendering essential services, obtaining essential goods or services, seeking medical attention, funeral services and for collecting payment of grants and pensions are allowed under the following circumstances
-The bus services and e-hailing services shall not carry more than 50% of the licensed capacity.
-Taxi services may not carry more than 70% of the licensed capacity – the concession that public transport vehicles may carry 100 per cent of capacity providing that all passengers wear masks have been removed.
-Private vehicles are not permitted to carry more than 60% of the licensed capacity, and that all directions in respect of hygienic conditions and the limitation of exposure of persons to COVID-19 are adhered to.
-Where a person rendering essential services is unable to travel to and from his or her place of employment, the employer must make the necessary transport arrangements: Provided that no more than 50% of the licensed capacity of the vehicle or vessel is exceeded and all directions in respect of hygienic conditions and the limitation of exposure to persons with COVID-19, are adhered to.
