Brakpan iRun Athletic Club athletes shine at provincials
The Brakpan-based athletes fared well at the CGA Provincial Track and Field Championships.
On the weekend of March 12 to 14, athletes from the local iRun Athletic Club delivered impressive performances at the CGA Provincial Track and Field Championships, held at Germiston and UJ Stadiums.
Among the standout performers were Brakpan-based athletes Cassandra-Lee Burisch and Iwan Labuschagne, both of whom secured podium finishes in their respective events.
Cassandra-Lee produced an excellent performance to claim the silver medal in the U18 women’s hammer throw, showcasing her strength and technical ability against strong provincial competition.
Iwan also delivered a commendable showing, earning a bronze medal in the boys’ U16 shot put. His consistency and composure under pressure ensured his place among the province’s top young throwers.

The success did not end there for the club. A total of five iRun Athletic Club athletes have been selected to represent Central Gauteng Athletics at the upcoming ASA National Championships, set to take place at Germiston Stadium from March 26 to 28.
Among those selected are two more Brakpan athletes: Melany Mans, who will compete in the U16 1500m steeplechase, and Iwan, who adds to his achievements by qualifying in both the U16 boys discus and shot put events.
“The athletes’ performances are a testament to the growing strength of the iRun Athletic Club and the dedication of its coaching structures,” said coach Jared de Waal.
“With several representatives heading to the national stage, the club and the Brakpan community will be eagerly watching as these young athletes continue to make their mark.”
