Brakpan police take GBV awareness campaign to informal settlement
Residents of the Magaleni informal settlement received information on gender-based violence, reporting procedures and available support during a community outreach campaign.
Brakpan police conducted a door-to-door campaign in the Magaleni informal settlement on July 7 to raise awareness about gender-based violence.
Social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi, together with a CPF member, two Siyabangena patrollers and a Victim Friendly Room volunteer, conducted the awareness campaign, which aimed not only to educate residents but also to improve victim support and help prevent violence.
According to Buthelezi, the SAPS is mandated to implement the GBV&F (gender-based violence and femicide) Action Plan, aligned with the National Strategic Plan on GBV&F, which requires awareness and prevention programmes to reduce GBV incidents and protect vulnerable citizens.
“The team interacted with residents one-on-one, fully explaining the information and reporting channels outlined in the pamphlets handed to them,” said Buthelezi.
“During the engagement, some community members raised GBV&F-related challenges they had encountered, and the law enforcers addressed those concerns.”
More than 50 pamphlets were distributed and 21 shacks were visited.
“The community members appreciated the engagement and the visibility of law enforcement in their area,” added Buthelezi.
