Carletonville girl who lost sight in one eye now excels in gymnastics
She recently won first place at a Losberg Gymnastics Club competition and continues to inspire with her determination and positive spirit.
A brave young girl from Welverdiend, Zanika Morton, is inspiring her community and beyond by thriving in gymnastics—despite permanently losing sight in one eye more than five years ago.
Zanika’s life changed dramatically on March 25, 2020, the first day of South Africa’s Covid-19 lockdown. She tripped over a toy bag and hit her head on the side of her parents’ bed. After visits to multiple medical specialists and undergoing two operations, doctors confirmed she had lost vision in one eye permanently.
Further reconstructive surgery followed, where a piece of fat was taken from near her hip to restore the shape of her shrinking eye. She was later fitted with a prosthetic eye covering to give her a natural appearance.
Despite the trauma, Zanika made a remarkable recovery and surprised everyone by quickly returning to everyday activities—and even excelling in modelling competitions soon after the accident.
Now eight years old, she has turned her attention to sports. Zanika recently joined the Losberg Gymnastics Club at the Carletonville Sports Centre, where she has already made a name for herself. At the club’s internal gymnastics competition held last weekend, she won first place in the Level 1–3 gymnast category, qualifying to progress to the next level of training and competition.
Her mother, Anika Morton, says Zanika is thriving. “She really enjoys gymnastics and never gives up. She doesn’t let anything keep her down. My heart swells with pride.”
Zanika’s journey continues to inspire many as a story of courage, perseverance, and determination. Her success in gymnastics is not just a personal victory—but a powerful reminder of how far resilience can take you.
