Members of the Merafong Business Chamber 2 (MBC2) held a strategic meeting with Harmony Gold Mine this week to explore procurement opportunities for local small businesses.

According to MBC2 chairperson Sibusiso Nhlapo, the chamber and Harmony’s Procurement team hosted an SMME Interview Session and Workshop on Wednesday, 9 July, at Harmony Village Club. The purpose of the engagement was to advocate for Harmony Gold Mine to source goods and services from local SMMEs within the Merafong City Local Municipality.

Approximately 50 local SMMEs were given the opportunity to present their businesses directly to Harmony’s procurement team.

“Harmony encouraged SMMEs to specialise and focus on commodities where they have proven competence,” said Nhlapo.

During the session, the businesses were introduced to Harmony’s procurement portal—an online platform where potential vendors can upload compliance documentation in preparation to be registered as vendors.

Once SMMEs pass a technical assessment, Harmony will motivate for them to receive vendor numbers so they can officially start supplying the mine.

This initiative forms part of MBC2’s broader efforts to combat unemployment by opening up procurement opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Shanielle Botha, Head of Harmony’s Procurement Department, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting local businesses.

She indicated that Harmony is dedicated to helping local SMMEs grow into sustainable enterprises, as long as they meet the required compliance standards.

Entrepreneurs whose documentation or processes still need refinement were referred to Harmony’s Enterprise Supplier Development (ESD) unit for further mentoring and coaching.

MBC2 concluded by calling on other mining companies in the area to follow Harmony’s example and join the collective effort to achieve economic freedom in our lifetime.
